The McDonalds Theory
Jon Bell wrote an interesting quick-read about a way to start creative processes.
I use a trick with co-workers when we’re trying to decide where to eat for lunch and no one has any ideas. I recommend McDonald’s.
He describes a situation everybody of us knows: Once McDonalds is announced the discussion starts and people start to get creative.
Jon points out:
People are inspired to come up with good ideas to ward off bad ones.
Since creative work has no defined process, this technique can be really helpful for us in our work and with our projects. Ideas are often just rolling around, we have no courage to handle with them seriously or can´t get over the first creative steps … Jon recommends just to do the first step, throw something up – however stupid it is.
One of his advices for an easier start is to begin with “This is probably crazy, but what if we …”.
His idea and theory is absolutely amazing, because one statement is more than true:
The second step is easier than the first. Always.
